Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) has said all is set for the 2025 Malawi Open Chess Championship which attracts foreign players.
The three-day championship is set for Salima next week.
It promises to be a highly competitive chess tournament with participating players coming from the host nation— Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, South Africa and Mozambique.
Chessam publicity secretary Francisco Mwangupili said the tournament, which is financially supported by the Malawi National Council for Sports, world chess body— Fide, Kwathu Kitchen and Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), is scheduled to take place from July 5 to 7, with July 4 and July 8 set for arrivals and departures, respectively.
“The venue is Sigelege Beach Resort in Salima, also presenting international players the opportunity to experience the charm of Lake Malawi.

“Being an open competition means players from any country are allowed to participate,” Mwangupili said.
The Chessam publicity secretary said the champion in the open category will get K1.8 million, with 12 more players getting prizes.
“The champion in the women’s category will walk away with K1 million, with 12 more players getting prizes.
“This tournament presents Malawians with an unprecedented opportunity to test their skill against some of the strongest chess players in Southern Africa. This year is quite intense as Zambia has fielded most of their strongest players,” Mwangupili said.
