Football Association of Malawi (Fam) is set to revise the contract for Malawi National Football Team coach Patrick Mabedi to align it with that of the Transforming the Game agenda.
The development comes as the association is pondering on scrapping off some of the targets in Mabedi’s contract.
Fam technical sub– committee chairperson Madalitso Kuyera, who is also the association’s first vice president, confirmed the development in an interview this week.
’’There were some targets which were set by the previous committee. The previous leadership had its own vision and gave the coach some targets and performance indicators. So we will revise some of the clauses in his contract to align them with our vision of Transforming the Game,’’ Kuyera said.
Mabedi signed a two-year contract as Flames coach in October last year after guiding the team to the Cosafa Cup semi-finals for the first time in 20 years.

However, the Flames crashed out of the tournament following a 3-0 loss on post-match penalties to Lesotho after a 1-1 stalemate in regulation time.
According to Kuyera, the previous Fam leadership gave Mabedi the target of winning the Cosafa Cup.
Kuyera said it will not be realistic to maintain such targets in the coach’s contract as Fam will send a developmental team at this year’s Cosafa Cup.
’’This year’s Cosafa Cup will be under a new technical panel specifically for the tournament. We want Mabedi to focus on the main team for the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers and Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers,’’ he said.

The Cosafa Cup is expected to kick off on June 14, just a few days after the Flames’ away match against Equatorial Guinea in the World Cup qualifiers.
Malawi will host Sao Tome and Principe on June 6 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
National Football Coaches Association General Secretary Davie Mpima hailed the idea of sending a developmental team to this year’s Cosafa Cup.
’’We are aware of the development and we fully support the idea. We have also recommended names of some coaches who will be in charge of the developmental team,’’ Mpima said.
This will be the first time for Malawi to send a developmental team to the Cosafa Cup.
Some of the Cosafa members including Zambia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia usually send developmental teams to the regional competition.
However, despite sending the main team, Malawi has never won the regional show piece.
