Civil society organisations (CSOs) have said there is a need to enhance knowledge on sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) among youths in urban areas.
Malawi SRHR Alliance Board Member Edna Tembo made the appeal in Lilongwe on Friday during an inception meeting on an urban youths centric project, namely Sexual Reproductive Health Strategies for Universal Health Coverage in Africa.
Tembo said they targeted young people in Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu because most urban areas do not benefit from projects of this nature, yet many young people, people with disabilities and people with diverse identities are mostly found there.
“If you look at most of the projects in the country, they focus on rural areas. We have, therefore, thought of engaging those in the cities so that they can have proper information on SRHR,” she said.
Malawi SRHR Alliance is working with Men Engage Alliance in the four-year project, which is running from 2024 to 2025.

Men Engage Alliance Chairperson Chimwemwe Ndhlovu said the project would also help improve coordination in the implementation of projects on SRHR.
“Coordination is one of the gaps we have observed. We would, therefore, like to see enhanced coordination among SRHR stakeholders,” she said.
The project is being funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation through Sonke Gender Justice.
Apart from Malawi, it will be implemented in Ethiopia and Uganda.
