Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) will this evening hold a corporate dinner at Mount Soche in Blantyre to drum up support for the Malawi Sport Awards ceremony.
Council is planning to hold a colourful ceremony at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe on February 16, when outstanding athletes and officials will be rewarded for their brilliance in the just- ended year.

The institution’s public relations and communications officer Edgar Ntulumbwa said MNCS Board Chairperson Sunduzwayo Madise will lead the exercise when council will engage stakeholders including the heads of government parastatals, departments and the corporate world in a fundraising drive for the awards.
“The stakeholder engagement meeting has also been organised to encourage heads of government departments and parastatals and the corporate world to make more efforts in supporting sporting codes to make sure that sports should develop in Malawi,” Ntulumbwa said.
Currently, the government, through MNCS, is the major sponsor of all sporting codes in Malawi.

Ntulumbwa said the engagement meeting is coming against the background that most sporting codes rely on government to conduct their programmes including participation in international tournaments.
“Sometimes some sporting codes fail to implement their programmes and participate in international tournaments because they lack funds.
“The engagement meeting will also try to persuade the private sector, heads of government departments and parastatals to support the Malawi Sport Awards as they are the biggest sports awards in Malawi and they are recognised in the Region 5 community,” Ntulumbwa said.
Recently, Madise announced that the council had extended an invitation to State President Lazarus Chakwera to attend the awards.

Meanwhile, sports analyst Frank Chakanga has applauded MNCS for the initiative.
“Such gatherings are important because they enable stakeholders to understand each other in an informal setup,” Chakanga said.
