Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) has postponed a fundraising golf tournament and dinner for the Malawi Youth Games.
The two events were scheduled for Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe on Saturday.
The dinner was expected to be a high-profile ceremony with President Lazarus Chakwera scheduled to attend while Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima was on the programme at Lilongwe Golf Club.
In a statement released Wednesday, MNCS did not indicate reasons for the postponement.
“The Malawi National Council of Sports would like to inform all stakeholders and the general public that the planned Malawi Youth Games fundraising golf tournament and dinner, which were scheduled to take place at Lilongwe Golf Club and the Bingu International Convention Centre, respectively, on Saturday 26th August 2023, have been postponed.

“MNCS will very soon announce new dates for the fundraising events. The council sincerely apologises for any inconvenience the postponement of the events may cause,” the statement, which MNCS Public Relations and Communications Officer Edgar Ntulumbwa has signed, reads.
However, sources indicate that the events have been rescheduled because Chakwera and Chilima are tied up with other pressing matters.
MNCS is planning to hold the national finals of the Games later this year in what will be the third edition.
The first edition took place in November 2021 when 7,150 schools across the country registered, with 163,000 learners getting involved.

About 800 learners competed for national honours at the finals under the theme ‘The Future Begins Now’.
The inaugural event cost about K150 million.
This was followed by the second edition in October last year at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe which had 11,200 schools.
At least 993,600 learners were involved in the Games with 1,200 learners competing for national honours.
The second edition’s theme was ‘Creating A Winning Nation’ and cost around K240 million.
The third edition is currently underway after starting in April with division finals to determine who will qualify for the national finals being held over the weekend.
