Malawi Public Sector Reforms office has indicated that the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) has made progress in implementing five out of the six reform areas it is working on.
M N C S was tasked to implement six reforms, n a m e l y revamping school sport; introducing an automated gate fees collection system; revising the Malawi National Council of Sports Act of 1974; rejuvenating sports in the country; enhancing financial sustainability of the council; and increasing corporate visibility of the council.
However, a December 2023 report has indicated that MNCS has registered progress in revamping school sport, after it revamped school sports with National Youth Games across the country.
It says some of the beneficiaries were included in the team that participated at the AUSC Region 5 under-20 youth games held in December, when Malawi won 29 medals.

Malawi also hosted the AUSC Regional 5 Games of 2022.

The report says other reform areas the council has made progress on pertain to the revision of the Malawi National Council of Sports Act of 1974.
“A draft Act of the Malawi National Council of Sports Act of (1974) has been submitted to Ministry of Youth and Sport for their onward transmission to the Ministry of Justice for approval,” the Public Reforms office report reads.
The report further indicates that MNCS has made headway in rejuvenating sports in the country, citing the launch of the Sports for All Programme at Uliwa Primary School ground in Karonga District in October 2021.
Sports Council has also been touted for enhancing financial sustainability.

“Sports administrators were trained in resource mobilisation and financial management in April 2021 to enhance the council’s financial sustainability and a new events garden was commissioned to expand MNCS revenue base,” the report reads.
It adds that MNCS has made progress in increasing its corporate visibility.
“A website and social media pages have been developed and the public relations [office] is frequently engaging with media houses to increase the council’s visibility.
“Billboards were also erected in implementing Reform Area 6 to increase MNCS’s corporate visibility,” the report reads.
It cites improved physical fitness and being mentally active, improved regulation of sports in associations that are operating in Malawi, enhanced catchment area for talent identification, improved performance at regional and/or international level and increased awareness of the existence and functions of the council among benefits of implementing reforms in sports.
