Industrial Relations Court (IRC) Mzuzu Registry has granted Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc) former employees an injunction that stops their former employer from evicting them from institutional houses.
The 4,062 ex-workers are still occupying Admarc houses, which are spread across the country, as the grain trader is yet to settle repatriation allowances.
Apart from the repatriation allowances, the ex-employees are demanding pension funds, unpaid salaries for skeleton staff, public holidays’ pay and four hours overtime amounting to over K3 billion.
“It is hereby ordered and directed as follows; that an urgent interim relief be and is hereby granted in favour of the applicants restraining the first respondent from doing the following until the determination of main matter or further order of this honourable court: (a) Evicting the applicants from the first respondents’ institutional houses before paying the repatriation costs,” the determination, which deputy chairperson Anthony Pitilizani Kapaswiche has made, reads.
The ex-employees sued the parastatal for delaying their retrenchment benefits and are demanding K3 billion-plus.
