Director of Museums and Monuments in the Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Lovemore Mazibuko, has said they are mobilising resources to renovate open air exhibits.
The development comes after Arts & Culture reported that some of the open air exhibits at Chichiri Museum in Blantyre are losing their stature.
When the Arts & Culture crew visited Chichiri Museum recently, it found that open air exhibits such as a fire fighting vehicle was damaged, with vandalism traits visible to the naked eye.
Mazibuko described the exhibits as vital in museums and monuments and that such elements need to be safeguarded.
“It is just that this is a busy period for us as we are facilitating the hosting of national public events. We just had Martyrs’ Day and, in January, we had Chilembwe Day. Kamuzu Day is also not far away from now. All the three events are coordinated by the department,” he said.

Mazibuko said, with the current financial year ending on March 31, transitioning would take time but was quick to say that they would do the maintenance.
He said that there was also a need for people in the country to know that each of the open air exhibits was donated to them by companies and institutions.
“Maintenance of the same is supposed to be done collaboratively for the fire fighting vehicle, locomotives and bus companies. We will be engaging them to provide support and help wherever necessary.
“It is also about their heritage and history, in terms of where they are coming from,” Mazibuko said.
