MultiChoice Africa Holdings (MAH) has announced the resumption of its DStv service in Malawi.
It follows the ruling delivered by the High Court sitting in Lilongwe on December 1 2023 in the matter between the company’s representatives in Malawi and the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority.
The ruling went in MultiChoice’s favour. In a statement, MAH assures customers that they are ready to serve them.
“Apart from the service resumption, as a gesture of goodwill, MAH will provide free access to our Malawian customers, who have been active at least once within this current year i.e. from 1st April 2023, and who have an operational DStv decoder, to our premium package for nine days from 6th December to 14th December 2023,” the statement reads.
The statement further indicates that MultiChoice will be reactivating all the payment platforms to enable resumption of the payment of subscription fees as per the price schedule effective August 1 2023.

MultiChoice has maintained an array of packages on the DStv platform, ranging from DStv Premium to DStv Kufewa, indicating that this is meant to ensure that every customer has a chance to access services and experience quality entertainment.
Commenting on the development, Consumers Association of Malawi Executive Director John Kapito welcomed MultiChoice’s statement.
“The withdrawal of their services, unfortunately for reasons that were only understood by the regulator, affected individuals, organisations and companies. Therefore, the free viewing of programmes is a business and market strategy to remind people about what they missed and ensure that they still have appetite for their services,” Kapito said.
The High Court of Malawi ruled in favour of MultiChoice Malawi in a case in which Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) was accusing the service provider of flouting provisions of the law by not informing the regulator about the proposal to adjust DStv premiums.

In his ruling, Judge William Yakuwawa Msiska said Macra acted beyond its jurisdiction as DStv rates are not set by MultiChoice Malawi.
