Research by Council for Non-Governmental Organisations in Malawi (Congoma) has revealed that over 50 NGOs close shop every year.
It cites funding hiccups among the contributing factors.
Congoma Programme Officer Simon Sauzande disclosed this in Lilongwe Wednesday during a Social Enterprise Training Programme for NGOs jointly organised by Corporate Africa International Foundation, Congoma, Good Soil Partners and the Catholic University of Malawi.
According to Sauzande, the coming to an end of project financing for some NGOs has often resulted in the death of the organisations.
He underscored the need for NGOs to engage in social enterprise activities which would complement project funding.

Corporate Africa International Foundation Executive Director Kay Kagwa said the aim of the Social Enterprise Programme was to empower local NGOs to be self-dependent.
“You know we are coming from a background where NGOs rely on donor funding. The main purpose of the programme is to empower the local NGOs to be independent and start implementing social enterprise activities so that they can be able to generate the income and invest the income back into the project,” Kagwa said.
