Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) said Monday that it needs close to K78 million to successfully execute this year’s Entertainers of the Year awards which have been resuscitated following a 15-year absence.
Entertainers of the Year awards, which were a household annual event held in December, were discontinued in 2005 by the State broadcaster before bringing in other awards such as ‘Our People Our Pride’ and Innovation Awards.
Speaking during a press briefing in Blantyre, MBC Director General George Kasakula called on people to participate in voting for their favourite entertainer in categories.
Kasakula further called on all well-wishers to partner the public broadcaster to make the event a success arguing it was a national event.
“In our budget, we are looking at spending more or less than K78 million. We need partners to run this. It is a national event and it is for everyone. We have opened it for everyone, in fact if no one from MBC won in the broadcast category, we would be just fine because, again, for us, we are just fulfilling our mandate; that is, to entertain the nation,” he said.

Kasakula said nominations for candidates will be opened in October and that voting for winners is expected to open in November through to December.
“We are hopeful that, by the time we open for nominations, we would have put in place measures that will help make voting as free and fair as possible. So, we will keep updating the general public on how best we will go about with voting. Voting will happen through Short Message Service (SMS),” he said.
The event is expected to take place on December 15 2023 in Lilongwe.
Entertainers of the Year awards recognise outstanding achievements across various entertainment categories of broadcast across the Malawi, music, drama, film, theatre and sports.

Meanwhile, creatives, who the state broadcaster engaged recently as part of getting views, have hailed MBC for re-introducing Entertainers of the Year awards describing it as a platform aimed at motivating and rewarding them to keep on bringing the ‘best’.
