The Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has appointed Eastern Region Football Association (ERFA) Chairperson Adbul Chiwalo as the new general secretary.
The association announced the appointment of Chiwalo on its official website Monday.
A Fam statement indicates that Chiwalo’s appointment is effective August 18 this year.
“A highly accomplished chartered accountant (ACCA) with over 15 years of experience in senior managerial and decision-making positions, specialising in financial management project management, procurement, donor fund administration, auditing and public sector reform,” the statement reads.
Fam President Fleetwood Haiya said the association’s executive committee unanimously appointed Chiwalo as GS following his proposal.

This is according to article 44 (3) of the Fam statutes, which give the association’s president powers to appoint a GS.
“The President shall propose the appointment or dismissal of the General Secretary,” it reads.
Chiwalo has replaced Alfred Gunda, who served in that role for eight years.
In reaction to his appointment, Chiwalo said he was ready for the big task.

“I am really humbled. It is an honour to be entrusted with a huge responsibility,” Chiwalo said in a brief interview yesterday.
Before his appointment, he also served as a member of Fam’s Finance and Administration sub-committee.
Chiwalo holds master’s degrees in financial management and economic policy as well as a batchelor’s degree in accounting.
Sports analyst Parry Chinyama said he was confident that Chiwalo would deliver the goods.
“Looking at his experience and qualifications, he deserves to be the CEO. In football, he might not have enough experience at the highest level but he can rely on those already in the system. It is expected of him to run the affairs of Fam for the betterment of football in all sectors,” Chinyama said.
According to Fam, Chiwalo has a proven track record in delivery fiduciary assessments, procurement audits and capacity building programmes for major international organisations, including the World Bank, the African Development Bank (AFDB) and the European Union, among others.
He also previously worked as management accountant at the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera), external auditor at EY and Durban Nondanga Audit firm, and management accountant at the Southern Region Water Board.
