At least 30 football coaches from across Malawi on Monday began participating in a Confederation of African Football (Caf) C Licence Coaching Course at Football Association of Malawi (Fam)’s Mpira Village in Blantyre.
Fam Vice President Madalitso Kuyera said the course was part of the association’s broader strategy to professionalise coaching in the country, with the aim of strengthening Malawi’s technical football development.
“This course is designed to build foundational knowledge, enhance practical coaching skills and prepare the participants for higher levels of certification,” Kuyera said.

The intensive course, which has attracted participants from various football backgrounds, was conducted in two phases: the first module from August 4 to 11, and the second from September 2 to 22, 2025.

Notable participants include former Flames and Super League stars Fisher Kondowe, Peter Wadabwa, Yamikani Fodya and Raquib Milanzi.
Speaking at the official opening, Kuyera expressed optimism that the programme would equip participants with skills that are necessary to nurture future football stars in Malawi.
“The goal is to empower coaches with modern knowledge on methodologies. This course is a building block toward having highly skilled local coaches across all regions,” he said.
The Caf C Licence is a minimum qualification for coaching at professional level within Caf member countries and is a vital component in aligning Malawi’s coaching standards with continental and global expectations.

Facilitators of the course include renowned Fifa/Caf coach Educator Zuneid Mall, Caf/Fifa Delivery Manager and former South African women’s national team captain Keneilwe Mathibela and Fam Technical Development Officer John Kaputa.
In his remarks, Mall commended Malawi’s efforts in capacity building and inclusive development of the sport.
“This is about transforming the way we develop players from grassroots to elite levels. Malawi is moving in the right direction,” he said.
Mall said there was a need for adaptability and innovation in modern football coaching.
“Football is constantly evolving. This course will equip coaches with modern methodologies and tactical understanding, which are essential in today’s game,” he said.
Chairperson for the Northern Region Football Coaches Committee Mcnebert Kazuwa said the course was timely.
“We are living in an era when football is dynamic. Coaches need to keep learning to stay relevant and effective. This kind of engagement is very important,” Kazuwa said.
In his remarks, Mike Banda, the Malawi national under-17 team manager and one of the participants, described the training as an eye-opener.
“This is an excellent opportunity for us. I believe that the knowledge and skills we are acquiring here will help us build better teams and elevate our football standards,” Banda said.
