Football Association of Malawi (Fam) and the Confederation of African Football (Caf) have stepped up efforts to promote safety and security of all stakeholders at football matches in the country.
The association, in conjunction with Caf, has organised a three-day Safe Stadium Initiative workshop for safety and security officers in domestic football in Lilongwe.
Speaking during the opening of the workshop Tuesday, Caf Safety and Security Officer Xolile Nokuthula Vilakati said the campaign was aimed at improving safety and security at stadia.
“Stadia should be a safer place for everyone. A Stadium is not a war zone but a place where people should have enjoyment, fun and where they should come with family members to enjoy football.
“We are here to promote that in Malawi. When people want to go to a stadium, they should know that they are going to a safer place where they will achieve their goal,” she said.

Nokuthula said the football governing body was prioritising the welfare of all stakeholders at stadia.
“It is important to minimise the [application of] force inside the stadium. We should give services, more than force, to the people who come to the stadium,” Nokuthula Vilakati said.
She also said Caf developing strategies for minimising the use of security institutions such as police and army.
“We can develop and put new strategies to use stewards or private security to minimise the work of police officers at the stadium,” she said.
