The Football Association of Malawi (Fam), in conjunction with National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc, Wednesday unpacked a K1 billion football sponsorship package.
The development came after the two parties signed an agreement last month.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony at Mpira Village in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre, Wednesday, Fam President Fleetwood Haiya said the K450 million has been dedicated to women’s football, with K500 million going towards the National Bank Championship, targeting District and Division One men’s football.
Haiya said out of the K450 million investment, K150 million would support the Malawi National Women’s Team, the Scorchers, whereas K280 million has been allocated to establish Malawi’s first-ever National Women’s Football League.

Haiya said the league marks a milestone in the development of women’s football in the country.

“For many years, the dream of a structured and professional women’s league remained out of reach due to funding constraints but, under Fam’s Transforming the Game strategy, we made this a priority. And, today, that dream becomes a reality, thanks to the bold support of National Bank of Malawi,” Haiya said.
The inaugural NBM National Women Football League will kick off on July 26.
Each of the 10 teams will get K13 million subvention plus two sets of uniforms and five match balls.
Haiya said the league would serve as the premier competition for women’s football in Malawi, laying the foundation for professionalism, talent discovery and greater participation.

“Having a Champions League at national level for women’s football will inspire the creation of more teams across regions and districts. We believe this will significantly contribute to the development of football in Malawi,” he said.
NBM plc Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager Akossa Hiwa said the bank’s investment in women’s football aligns with its vision of inclusion and empowerment.
“By investing in the National Bank Women’s National League and the Mo626 Division One League, we are putting our brand where it belongs—in the hands, hearts and hopes of Malawians everywhere, whether in the city or in the most remote village pitch,” Hiwa said.
The 2025-26 National League will feature 10 teams and follow a two-round round-robin format, with each team set to play 18 matches.
The champions will pocket K10 million whereas the runners-up will get K5 million.
The third-placed team will get K3 million.
The K1 billion women’s football sponsorship is part of a larger K1.5 billion package announced by NBM plc in June, with the remaining K500 million earmarked for youth sports, including football, netball and basketball in tertiary education institutions.
