Malawi National Football Team, the Flames, players got a timely boost after Football Association of Malawi (Fam) paid their game bonuses immediately after the 3-1 victory over Sao Tome and Principe in a 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifier at Bingu National Stadium on Thursday.

The Flames are scheduled to face Equatorial Guinea away in Malabo this afternoon.

According to the Fam website, the players, who are entitled to K500,000 for a win, got K750,000 each after the association added K250,000.

thought of adding
value

Fam Executive Committee Member Daudi Mtanthiko, who is the Head of Delegation in Equatorial Guinea, said the gesture was aimed at motivating the players ahead of this afternoon’s match.

“We always want to thank the players whenever they make us proud. Winning that game at home alone was a morale booster ahead of the away fixture. We thought of adding value to it by paying them off just after the match,” Mtanthiko said.

Flames captain John Banda said the gesture would motivate them ahead of today’s match.

“I have been part of the Flames set up since 2011 and never have we been paid our game bonus on the same day. This is historic and very commendable. It just shows that the new leadership has the welfare of players at heart. Fam has done its part and has shown that it is committed to improving our welfare and it’s now our turn to deliver on Monday,” Banda told the Fam website.

Former Flames coach Kinnah Phiri, who is also deputy director of sports, speaking in his personal capacity, hailed Fam for the gesture.

“This is commendable. The welfare of the players should be a priority. I am sure the players are motivated ahead of the match,” Phiri said.

The Flames players are also entitled to K300,000 appearance fee. On top of that, Flames players each get $100 (about K200,000) as external allowance per day.
