Three fashion designers and two models leave the country today for Conakry, Guinea, to represent Malawi at the 2023 International Fair for the African Fashion and Textiles (Sita).
The three designers are Zikani Nyirenda, who trades under the banner of Zik Garvey, Beatrice Mabvuto, who works under Scorpii Clothing and Victoria Gaskins, who goes by the brand name House of Stitches.
The two models, who will showcase the Malawian fashion brands, are Miss Malawi Jescar Mponda and Keitumile Kawilima.
A press statement from Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture, dated November 1 2023 and signed by the ministry’s secretary James Chiusiwa, says the event starts on November 6 and ends on November 11.
The statement says this is part of the on-going initiatives by the Department of Arts in the ministry to promote Malawian creative products for the export market, guided by the Malawi 2063.

It says that as an international platform, Sita is a framework for the promotion and development of the African fashion and textile industry which brings together decision makers, fashion players, industry experts of the African textile and experts of trade from Africa and beyond.
The statement says for the 2023 edition of Sita, activities will include a street parade showcasing country delegations and their African fashion products, exhibitions, conference, fashion show, training in African colouring and weaving, training session on e-trade and awards gala for players in the African fashion and textile industry.

Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda had an audience with the delegation on Wednesday.
Chiusiwa says in the statement that this is an opportunity to highlight the rich cultural heritage and traditions of Malawi as expressed through fashion.

Nyirenda said he was happy to be part of the delegation and that this was an opportunity for them to showcase how much talent Malawi has to the world of fashion.
“It is my wish to see Malawi command respect as a fashion hub just like London in the United Kingdom, Milan in Italy and Johannesburg in South Africa. It is also a great opportunity for growth and networking as designers,” he said.
Gaskins said the purpose of this journey was not only to showcase their latest fashion collection but also to promote cultural exchange and collaboration between Malawi and Guinea.
Meanwhile, Chingalire Homestay, which is led by veteran musician Ben Mankhamba, who is also Village Head Chingalire, leaves the country today for London, where they will exhibit at the World Travel Market London Trade Fair.
