Makasu Band, which made headlines with songs such as ‘Masese’, ‘Napolo’ and ‘Anasiketi’, is set to make a comeback after years of silence.
Veteran keyboardist and producer Stain Phiri, who is also one of the surviving members of Kalimba Band, confirmed the development Thursday.
“I am pleased to announce the rebirth of Makasu Band. It is a tough assignment but we are ready. We have made consultations and we feel we are good to go and bring back the good old days of Makasu,” Phiri said.

He revealed that Patrick Kamende will manage the band alongside Zebron Kankhunda.
“I will be the producer both for recording and live shows. Patrick Simakweli will assist me in live performances production,” Phiri, who has produced music for several artists both in and outside the country, said.

He said their aim is to make the band gain international repute and keep the momentum as it used to do in the past years.
Having first starred with Kalimba, which conquered the world with Make Friends with the World, Phiri left for Makasu before he left the country for greener pastures in 1990.
“There was New Look Makasu in 2000 before Bright Livewire Nkhata passed on. Now we are back to keep the name Makasu alive. Things have changed, young people are doing well but we will keep up the pace without compromising on the music we are known for,” he said.
Phiri said they have already finalised some deals for the band to tour Botswana and Namibia next year.

On his part, Kamende said they were serious with Makasu’s resurgence and that they have already made headway with rehearsals ahead of live performances.
“We are experienced, we know what we are doing and for us music is in our blood. Things have changed but we will hit the ceiling for we already have the foundation,” he said.
Kamende said they also decided to support Phiri to uplift Malawi music.
“We will release a 10-track album in December this year. We actually have already dropped some songs for people to sample,” he said.
