ALL FEMALE—The Daughters Band perform
SHARE

Female bands are gradually making inroads with a recent walk coming from The Daughters Band from Music Crossroads Malawi in Lilongwe.

The Daughters Band on Thursday starred at Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Session at Alliance Francaise de Blantyre where they won the hearts of the audience.

This was the first time for the current group which has new faces to perform at Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Session.

Led by Lissa Banda on guitar, the band excited the audience in that there was no male folk with all the playing being done by the womenfolk.

Banda said as The Daughters Band, they are trying to change the narrative and show that women have what it takes to excel in music by not only doing vocals and dance but also playing instruments.

“The past years, women were relegated to playing vocals and dancing in a band but now we can play instruments just like our male counterparts,” she said.

Their set saw them playing a number of covers that had the audience on the dance floor throughout including Anthony Makondetsa’s Ndilibe Mlandu’.

The Daughters Band also dished out own songs.

“We want to rise as one of the top bands,” Banda said.

Makondetsa popularly known as Mr Cool hailed The Daughters Band for taking their time to put his song on their menu.

“This means more for me as an artist; it shows that my songs are an inspiration to other musicians as well. Again, I am happy because this is an all-female band and to see them playing instruments,” he said.

Music Crossroads Malawi Director Mathews Mfune said recently that they are happy with the strides made especially when it comes to building all female bands.

“We have made progress in shaping women to play instruments and showing that women have what it takes to excel in music not only through vocals and dance but playing instruments as well,” Mfune said.

The Daughters Band on Saturday performed at Mibawa Band.

Apart from The Daughters Band, there are also other female bands that have been born and they include The Big Six, fashioned by former members.

Hosted by ethno-musician Waliko Makhala, The Daughters Banda’s performance was spiced up by poet Yankho Seunda.

Before serving his poem, Seunda took time out to call upon people to patronise the launch of his@35 album set for this Saturday at Apollo Auditorium in Blantyre.
