Grand Palace Hotel in Mzuzu on Tuesday donated K5 million to Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) to go towards this year’s Entertainers of the Year Awards slated for December 30 2023.
Speaking during a cheque presentation ceremony, Grand Palace Hotel Sales and Marketing Manager Gregory Maulana said they believe in promoting the creative sector because it has the potential to boost the tourism sector.
Maulana said it was unfortunate that people fail to recognise the country’s creative industry “but are obsessed with foreign talent.”
“Let us start supporting each other because it is the same people that MBC is awarding who will represent us elsewhere. We also know that these are the same people that will help us in our hospitality business, hence our support today,” he said.
MBC Public Relations and Customer Affairs Manager Chisomo Mwamadi hailed Grand Palace Hotel for the gesture, further asking other companies and organisations to emulate the spirit.

Mwamadi said this year’s Entertainers of the Year Awards are open to all individuals of Malawian origin currently practising their trade within or outside Malawi to ensure inclusivity and at the same time promote competitiveness.
“We noted that there was a gap in terms of awarding entertainers in the country; so we are coming in to appreciate what they are doing. We are engaging an independent audit firm which will be receiving the nominations and the voting to ensure credibility,” he said.
The awards, which were first introduced in 1970 and were halted in 2005, will decorate players in broadcasting, music, drama, film, theatre and sports.
