Immediate-past Silver Strikers coach Peter Mponda could find himself between a rock and a hard place as he has a K26 million release clause.
This means Mponda is not free to sign a contract with any team before activating his release clause from Silver.
This is despite that he resigned from his post last week.
Mponda is likely to replace Zimbabwean coach Kalisto Pasuwa at FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.
A well-placed source at Silver confided in us that Mponda’s hands are tied due to terms and conditions he signed with the club.
“It is tricky for him. He is supposed to pay a certain amount to Silver before signing for another team as stipulated in the contract he signed,” said the source.
Mponda resigned from his position at Silver last week due to personal reasons, four weeks after winning the TNM Super League title.
In winning it, he ended the club’s 11-year wait for the title.
Mponda had already signed a two-year contract extension with Silver before the start of the second round.
Furthermore, the source said Mponda already pocketed his signing-on-fee for the new deal.
“He already got some of the benefits for his new deal. It is obvious that Silver would want to recover the money.
“He [Mponda] will be taken to task for breach of contract,” said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Silver Chief Executive Officer Patrick Chimimba was reluctant to comment on the issue.
“No comment,” Chimimba said.
The development could be a stumbling block to his proposed return to Bullets.
Mponda was not readily available for his comment Monday.
But, last week, he confirmed that his release clause was at K26 million.
Mponda said the club was fond of leaking important documents.
“Silver [seem to] have [a] business of leaking things from day one I came here. They have their reasons why they do that,” he said.
Silver have already appointed Peter Mgangira as Mponda’s replacement.
Initially, Mgangira was Mponda’s assistant.
Reports suggest that Mponda has already agreed terms to return to Bullets.
But Bullets Chief Executive Officer Albert Chigoga said there was nothing concrete.
“There is nothing at the moment between him [Mponda] and the club,” Chigoga said.
Mponda worked as assistant coach to Pasuwa for three seasons before he moved to South Africa’s Black Leopards in 2023 and, then, Silver Strikers.
