By Praise Majawa:

Mighty Wanderers forward Lameck Mithi has expressed gratitude to teammates for helping him win the FDH Bank Premiership award.

Mithi scooped the FDH Bank Premiership player-of-the-month award whereas Ekhaya Football Club (FC) Assistant Coach Fundi Akidu was voted as the best coach for May.

This follows their impressive record for their respective clubs in the FDH Bank Premiership. The Super League of Malawi (Sulom) released names of the winners Wednesday.

In an interview Wednesday, Mithi attributed the award to collective support from teammates and the technical panel.

“It is a result of the hard work I have put in, together with my teammates and the technical team. I am grateful for the recognition, but my focus is on keeping improving, scoring more goals and helping the team win trophies,” Mithi said.

He said the award would also serve as a source of motivation to continue working hard and contributing to the team’s success.

“I am very happy to win the award, especially being my first season at Wanderers,” he said.

Mithi beat Silver Strikers FC’s Ernest Petro and Blue Eagles FC’s Webster Nzunda to claim the monthly award after an impressive run of performances.

The forward featured in all six league matches for Wanderers in May, scoring five goals, including a hat-trick, and also winning one man-of-the-match award.

Mithi, Festus Duwe and Ephraim Kondowe are top of the scorers’ chart with five goals each. He will pocket K300,000 for winning the award.

In a related development, Akidu scooped the coach-of-the-month accolade after an impressive spell as caretaker coach.

Akidu, who served as Ekhaya FC interim coach following the suspension of Enos Chatama then, edged Blue Eagles’ Declerk Msakakuona and Masters FC’s Peter Mponda to win the accolade.

He guided Ekhaya to three wins and one defeat in four league matches, including back-to-back victories, helping the club turn around its fortunes after a difficult start to the season. For winning the award, Akidu will get K500,000.

Akidu was not readily available for his comment Wednesday.
