By Innocent Kalikokha:
President Lazarus Chakwera has described the Bangula-Marka railway rehabilitation project as a panacea for the country’s socio-economic development.
Chakwera said this at Mtowe and Nsanje Boma trading centres in Nsanje District, where he had a whistle-stop tour.
“The Nsanje-Bangula Railway Project will help to reduce prices of commodities. Railway transport is cheaper than other modes of transport.
“My government is also rehabilitating the railway to restore Nsanje’s township status,” Chakwera said.

Chakwera, who is also the torchbearer for the governing Malawi Congress Party in the September 16, 2025 Presidential Election, inspected some sites of the railway project.
The President reiterated that he was committed to improving the welfare of Malawians.
“I will, therefore, continue providing loans to small-scale businesspeople through the National Economic Empowerment Fund,” Chakwera said.
On his part, Senior Chief Chimombo hailed the current administration for implementing the railway project.

“The project will, among other things, spur economic opportunities for jobless youths in our district,” Chimombo said.
Chakwera visited a number of sites on his whistlestop tour of Nsanje Tuesday.
