President Lazarus Chakwera, who is also president of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), has called on people who hold political positions to be using their positions to protect and advance the interests of the people and not to victimise others.

Chakwera said this at Mangochi Boma Monday, when he addressed a brief rally on his way from Blantyre to Chikoko Bay State Lodge, where he will be operating from for the next two weeks.

“Let me urge political leaders, especially those from the Malawi Congress Party, not to be using your powers to victimise others. That is not in our agenda. Use your positions to support, uplift and develop people and not abuse them,” he said.

He further emphasised the need to be promoting peace during the election period so that Malawians can be given an opportunity to elect their representatives without coercion.

“Political violence has no place in this country. It was painful for me to see a traditional leader kneeling down, apologising on behalf of the people over the political violence [incident] that happened in Machinga. Let us not engage in political violence. Malawi is a peaceful country and we should maintain that,” he said.

Chakwera said his administration was aware of the challenges which were affecting Malawians, indicating that his administration was working on implementing permanent solutions to the challenges so that Malawians could enjoy the benefits for generations to come.

“Let us all hold hands and play our part in making sure that we are dealing with the challenges collectively. This government is not interested in temporary solutions,” he said.

In his remarks, MCP secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda thanked the President for promoting peace as the country is preparing for the September 16, 2025 Local Government, Parliamentary and Presidential Elections.

“We are happy to have you as our State President at this moment because you are also implementing projects without looking at the region or district [one comes from]. Here in Mangochi, your government is constructing town roads, water plants, District Commissioner’s offices, a hospital in Makanjira and many other things,” he said.
