Police have confirmed the arrest of former State House Chief of Staff Prince Kapondamgaga in connection with ongoing investigations into the sale of Amaryllis Hotel.
Sources within the Malawi Police Service (MPS) said Kapondamgaga was arrested alongside several other individuals, who are being questioned as part of the probe.
The sources further indicated that some officials from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) were among those that were being targeted in the investigations.

MPS spokesperson Lael Chimtembo confirmed the development but said full details would be released later.
“I can confirm [reports of] the arrests,” Chimtembo said.

The arrest comes weeks after Kapondamgaga appeared before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (Pac), which is conducting a special public inquiry into the K128 billion acquisition of Amaryllis Hotel by the Public Service Pension Trust Fund (PSPTF).
During his appearance before the committee, Kapondamgaga denied playing any active role in the transaction.
He told lawmakers that his involvement was limited and that he did not issue any instruction or guidance regarding the proposed purchase.
The former Chief of Staff said he only attended one meeting as an observer representing the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC).

Kapondamgaga also questioned how the acquisition of such a high-value asset was allowed to proceed at a time the government had imposed strict austerity measures and suspended smaller expenditures within State-owned enterprises.
Pac members have been questioning several key figures linked to the transaction as part of efforts to establish circumstances surrounding the purchase of the Blantyre-based hotel.
