President Lazarus Chakwera is in South Africa, where he intends to garner international support to bolster Malawi’s economic recovery plan.
Presidential Press Secretary Anthony Kasunda told The Daily Times that the President wants to engage with world leaders and partners during the visit.
“President Chakwera’s proactive approach in seeking support from Brics nations demonstrates his commitment to steering Malawi towards a path of sustainable economic growth and resilience.
“So, yes, I can confirm that His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, has arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa, ahead of the Brics summit scheduled to start on Tuesday,” he said.
The Brics Plus Outreach Summit gathers leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, along with invited African heads of State and government, to discuss matters of mutual concern and explore avenues for collaboration.
Chakwera will be among African heads of State and government that have been invited to attend the 15th Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (Brics) Plus Outreach Summit.
Kasunda said the President’s presence in the Rainbow Nation offers him an opportunity to engage development partners on ways of addressing the country’s debt.
“However, the President had to come a bit earlier because he has critical engagements which are beneficial to Malawi in its push for economic recovery. By fostering constructive discussions on debt management, Chakwera aims to pave the way for the International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF), which offers hope for the country’s economic turnaround,” he said.
Chakwera arrived in South Africa from Angola on Saturday evening.
