President Lazarus Chakwera has assured representatives from the Malawi Public Universities Union that his administration will address their concerns, especially regarding the review of tuition fees.
The union, which comprises all six public universities in the country, met Chakwera at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe Tuesday.
Presidential Press Secretary Anthony Kasunda confirmed that the meeting took place.
“The President assured the union that their concerns will be addressed. He has pledged to positively consider their request for a further review of [fees] and emphasised the need for transparency in the disbursement of loans,” Kasunda said.
Hundreds of students in public universities have been struggling to pay tuition fees following what they describe as colossal hikes.

Reports indicate that some deserving needy students fail to access loans disbursed by the Higher Education Students Loans and Grants Board apparently because the funds are not enough.
Kasunda said during the meeting, Chakwera highlighted the crucial role that students play in shaping the future of Malawi.
Speaking on behalf of the union, Alexander Kude hailed Chakwera for engaging the students on “significant matters” and that the President is playing “an instrumental role in driving positive change”.
Kude specifically highlighted the “developmental significance” of Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa University, recognising it as a key opportunity to expand access to education and contribute to national development.
