Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) President Jappie Mhango has become the first Malawian to serve in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) commission following his appointment into the Public Affairs and Corporate Communications commission of the committee.
A letter from IOC, dated August 23 2023 and signed by president Thomas Bach, states: “Having reviewed the composition of the IOC commission for this year, in consultation with their respective chairs, it is with great pleasure for me to appoint you as a member of the Public Affairs and Corporate Communications Commission.”
Mhango said he graciously accepted the role.
“This means Malawi will be part of decision making at the highest level. The recognition is a manifestation of the trust that IOC has in my capability and, therefore, I am significantly humbled. This also puts our country in a good position as it shall be part of decision making at the highest level in sports,” the Rumphi North Member of Parliament said.

The main functions of the commission include advising the IOC Session, Executive Board and President on strategies for protecting and promoting the autonomy and neutrality of sport.
The commission also advises on the role of sport and olympism in society as a contributor to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and a contributor to peace.
The development comes after Mhango was named in the six-member committee for the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (Anoca) Games slated for Accra, Ghana, next year.
Mhango said he will handle both roles professionally, knowing that the reputation of the country is at stake.

“The roles are at different levels. At Anoca, I will be managing games where this association has a role while the new one is at world level. This essentially means that, for the first time, a Malawian will be serving in the IOC. It is historical,” he said.
