IN HIGH SPIRITS—The girls team
SHARE

Malawi boys and girls school teams will be looking for a good start at the 2025 Caf African Schools Football Championship/ Cosafa Qualifier.

Both teams will start their Group C campaign against Lesotho in Cape Town, South Africa this morning. Boys coach Joseph Malizani said his charges are looking for a positive start. “We are ready to start the tournament on a high. Our target is to win all the group stage matches,” he said.

The boys team will be hoping for an improved performance this year having exited the tournament in the semi-finals following a 2-1 to South Africa. In 2022, the team lost 1-0 to South Africa’s Clapham High School at Bingu National Stadium.

Girls coach Bridget Chirwa believes the girls can qualify for the continental finals for the second consecutive year.

Top two teams in each group along with the best second-placed team will qualify for the semi-finals. Since the inception of the competition in 2022, South Africa have dominated.

The champions of the 2025 Caf African Schools Football Championship/ Cosafa Qualifier will pocket USD 100,000 whereas the runners-up will get USD 75,000. The bronze medallists will pocket USD 50,000.

In addition, the champions in each category will qualify for Caf African Schools Football Championship finals. Tanzania are the defending champions in the boys’ category whereas Ghana won the title in girls’ football last year.
