Mlambe Mission Hospital has installed a K400 million worth solar power as its primary energy source.
The 95-kilovolt-ampere (KVA) solar power plant was officially launched recently by the Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola in Blantyre.
The minister said the initiative aligns with the broader national agenda of fostering renewable energy adoption, reducing carbon footprints, and enhancing energy security.
“The initiative demonstrates a robust model for other institutions in Malawi to emulate. By reducing dependence on the traditional grid and harnessing the power of the sun, the hospital is setting a precedent for environmentally conscious and economically sound healthcare operations,” Matola said.

Senior Administrative Officer at Mlambe Mission Hospital, Felix Chauluka, expressed optimism about the financial benefits of the transition.
“The hospital is set to save approximately K4.5 million in monthly energy bills, thanks to this clean energy initiative. These savings can be redirected towards improving healthcare services and facilities, ensuring that patients receive better care,” Chauluka said.
The project was implemented by SoPowerful Foundation.
Director of Sopowerful Foundation Stefano Cruccu said the project is crucial in ensuring sustainable energy source for the hospital.
