LEADER IN AFRICA—MSE posts record 247 percent growth
SHARE

The Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE) has emerged as Africa’s best-performing stock market in 2025, recording a remarkable 247 percent year-to-date gain and significantly outperforming both regional and continental peers, according to the latest African Markets data.

Figures published on the official Kenyan Wall Street platform show Malawi ahead of Zambia, Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt and South Africa.

Zambia ranked second with a 66 percent gain, supported by improved macroeconomic stability and rising investor confidence following progress on debt restructuring.

Nigeria and Kenya followed with gains of 49 percent each, while Botswana posted a modest nine percent increase and Mauritius fell by 1.8 percent.

MSE data indicate that market capitalisation rose sharply to K32.6 trillion between January and December 2025, up from K12.1 trillion in 2024.

This represents a historic milestone, with market value exceeding 100 percent of Malawi’s nominal gross domestic product (GDP), estimated at around K30 trillion.

In an earlier interview, MSE Chief Executive Officer John Kamanga highlighted “the exceptional performance”, adding that the market index had risen by over 260 percent year-to-date.

Kamanga attributed the rally to strong performance across most listed companies, underpinned by solid fundamentals that boosted investor confidence.

Commenting on the surge, Stock Brokers Malawi Business Development Manager Kondwani Makwakwa said the gains were largely driven by strong domestic investor demand, as investors sought to preserve value amid high inflation and a lack of attractive alternative investments.

According to Makwakwa, inflation averaging 28 percent in 2025, limited fixed-income instruments offering real returns and continued currency pressures prompted both retail and institutional investors to channel more funds into equities as a store of value, despite the challenging macroeconomic environment.

“Malawi’s market is relatively small, which means that when demand rises, share prices can increase significantly,” Makwakwa said.

He also cited robust corporate earnings, particularly in the banking and financial services sector, as a key factor supporting the market’s performance.

“Investors naturally prefer companies that demonstrate strong financial health. Banks have benefited from high interest rates, which have improved their interest margins and profitability, strengthening investor confidence in the sector,” he said.

Makwakwa further said that valuations were elevated during the year, with average price-to-earnings ratios above historical norms and higher than those in many comparable African markets.

“With only about 16 listed companies, low free float and strong demand, share prices can sometimes move sharply and appear unusually high. However, it is encouraging that most listed companies continue to report solid profits, which provides some fundamental support to these valuations,” he added.

Despite the strong performance, Makwakwa advised investors to look beyond headline index gains and focus on company fundamentals, diversification and sound risk management.

“Looking ahead to 2026, it is unlikely that the market will repeat the exceptional pace of growth seen in 2025. Some price adjustments across a few counters may continue in the early months of the year, reflecting normal profit-taking after strong gains. This should be viewed as a healthy market adjustment rather than a loss of investor confidence,” he said.

With only 16 listed companies, MSE remains among the smallest bourses in Africa, compared with about 59 listed firms in Kenya, 151 in Nigeria and more than 400 in South Africa, which also has over 800 listed securities.
