By Cathy Maulidi:
Malawi and Tanzania have agreed to strengthen bilateral relations.
Tanzania’s new ambassador to Malawi Agness Richard Kayola said this after meeting with President Lazarus Chakwera Tuesday, when she also presented her Letters of Credence to the President.
She presented the letters a day before the official visit of Tanzanian president Samia Sululu Hassan to Malawi for the 59th independence anniversary celebrations.
“Tanzania and Malawi share very long historical relations in business, investments and many projects that have been done at the regional level as we are both members of Sadc,” Kayola said.

To strengthen the trade relations, Kayola expressed the need for the two countries to create awareness on trade requirements that can help address challenges that traders in the two countries encounter when doing business.
“The people who trade between the two countries encounter different challenges, some because they do not have information on the right procedures to be followed. So, awareness on the papers they are supposed to fill and other processes would help reduce the challenges and increase opportunities for business,” she said.
Meanwhile, Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo has said, as one way of strengthening trade relations, the two countries have agreed to have a one-stop border post in Karonga.
“The President wants the relationship between the two countries to grow. So he touched on the issue of power inter-connection between the two countries and a one-stop border post that the two countries want to put up at Karonga,” Tembo said.

She also said the Malawi Government asked Tanzania to consider giving documentation to Malawians living in Tanzania.
“We have many Malawians living in Tanzania; they went there long time ago and some are stateless. As such, we want Tanzania to consider them,” Tembo said.
