Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale has challenged small-scale farmers to consider putting some of their land under macadamia cultivation as the government is considering establishing mega farms that will focus on production of the crop.
Kawale emphasised the need to add value to all export products to grow the economy.
He made the remarks on Wednesday when he inspected one of the macadamia mega farms at Gala Macs Company Limited at Namitete in Lilongwe.
“A cordial relationship between the government and the business sector is crucial to finding lasting solutions to economic challenges which the country is experiencing. The vision is to collaborate with various players to create a sustainable future for all,” Kawale said.

Gala Macs Company Limited Country Executive Officer Christo Bothma asked the government to provide a ready market to macadamia small-scale farmers to close the marketing gap.
“Most challenges are when we are exporting our products. We need the government to come in, especially when we want to export to China,” Bothma said.
Malawi is the third largest exporter of macadamia nuts in Africa after South Africa and Kenya, and the seventh globally.
