Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale has said investing in irrigation farming is paramount to achieving food security, bolstering the economy and enabling the government to realise aspirations embedded in Malawi 2063.
Kawale made these remarks during the inauguration of construction activities for the Dowa Dambo Irrigation Scheme, valued at K29.1 billion.
He emphasised that the implementation of the irrigation scheme will significantly enhance the country’s agricultural output, leading to increased food production and income generation through the sale of harvested crops.
Bernadette Mazarura Mukonyora, the country director for International Fund for Agricultural Development, highlighted their role in supporting the government by ensuring sufficient funding to meet its development priorities.

“We are committed to funding this programme to empower the government in promoting food security and enhancing food production in the nation,” Makonyora said.
Member of Parliament for Dowa Ngala Constituency Aurthor Mavuto Sungitsa expressed appreciation for the commencement of the project within his jurisdiction.
The irrigation scheme, spanning 453 hectares, will be executed by the Foundation for Irrigation and Sustainable Development in collaboration with a joint venture between the Sawa group and Sico Companies.
This initiative marks the eighth scheme being developed by the government through the Department of Irrigation under the Programme for Rural Irrigation Development.
