The meeting between Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and Football Association of Malawi (Fam) officials failed to take place on Monday, Times Sport has established.
The ministry summoned the association to a meeting, which was initially scheduled for Monday, in Lilongwe. However, the meeting did not take place due to unavailability of some officials.
Spokesperson for the ministry, Macmillan Mwale, said the meeting would be rescheduled. “It was rescheduled as it was communicated that some officials were not available. It will be scheduled for another day, when all parties will be available,” Mwale said.
The meeting was expected to discuss issues such as recent events, including the manhandling of Lilongwe City Mayor Peter Banda during the 2026 NBS Bank Charity Shield trophy presentation at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe and the initial postponement of the FDH Bank Premiership launch match between Mighty Wanderers and Karonga United at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
Match-day security ordered the mayor to leave the podium, a scene which sparked controversy in domestic football.

However, Fam then apologised to the ministry and mayor for the incident. Times Sport has established that the meeting did not take place as Fam President Fleetwood Haiya and General Secretary Abdul Chiwalo were abroad for the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) annual general meeting (AGM) in Harare, Zimbabwe.
During the AGM, Haiya was endorsed as Cosafa candidate for the Confederation of African Football Executive Committee member post. Haiya said on Monday that the association requested for the rescheduling of the meeting as they were engaged in activities at the Cosafa AGM.
“We requested the ministry and they accepted our request,” he said.
