Ministry of Youth and Sports has summoned Football Association of Malawi (Fam), Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) and other sports associations over poor performance of national teams in recent international competitions.
The meeting is slated to take place next week in Lilongwe.
Apart from Fam and Moc, the Ministry has summoned Judo, Taekwondo, Swimming, Malawi Athletics and Malawi Boxing associations.
This has come after athletes from different sporting codes, including football, judo, athletics, swimming and boxing have failed to live up to expectations in international tournaments.
Malawi National Football Team, the Flames, were embarrassed on home soil during the Four Nations Tournament in which they finished bottom at Bingu National Stadium.

The Flames suffered third consecutive home defeats in all competitions having lost 4-0 to Kenya and 2-1 to Zambia. They also lost 1-0 to Tunisia in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers in November.

Spokesperson for the ministry Macmillan Mwale confirmed the development Wednesday.
’’The ministry has called for a meeting to review Malawi’s participation in international games. The meeting will come up with recommendations going forward,’’ Mwale said.
The Flames are expected to face Sao Tome and Principe at home in the World Cup qualifiers before travelling to Equatorial Guinea in June this year. They will also participate in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and Cosafa Cup.

Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda was not readily available for his comment Wednesday.
The meeting also comes after Team Malawi came empty handed from the 13th edition of African Games in Ghana last month. Malawi sent athletes in various sporting codes but all failed.
Moc Director General Naomi Chinatu expressed ignorance about the meeting with the Sports Ministry.
’’We have not received any invitation. We will be able to comment once we get the invitation,’’ Chinatu said.
Moc is responsible for providing training and technical support to athletes that participate in Olympics and Commonwealth Games. The country has gone 38 years without winning a medal at the Commonwealth Games. The last time Malawi won medals was in 1986 during the games that were held in Edinburg, Scotland.
Some sports analysts have said Malawi has capable athletes who can win medals but lack enough support. Some blame Team Malawi’s failure on poor preparations and lack of sound policies.
The performance of local boxers in recent international tournaments has also been a major concern.
