Super League of Malawi (Sulom) Executive Committee has appointed its vice president Gilbert Mitawa as the association’s acting president.
Mitawa has replaced Fleetwood Haiya, who relinquished the post after being elected Fam President on December 16.
“Following the resignation of the former president of the Super League of Malawi, Mr. Fleetwood Haiya, the Sulom Executive Committee resolved to appoint Col. Gilbert Mitawa as the president until the next Extra Ordinary General Assembly as provided for in Article 26 (3)(4) of the Sulom Constitution,” the statement, which was released yesterday, reads.
Sulom General Secretary Williams Banda said they followed provisions of the constitution as the office of the president does not need to be vacant for so long.
“We met on December 22 where we agreed to appoint him [Mitawa] as acting president. The constitution clearly outlines this,” Banda said.
However, Banda said the post of one executive member, which fell vacant when Daud Mtathiko was elected Fam Executive Member, will be filled during the association’s next executive meeting.
On his part, Mitawa said he would continue implementing the manifesto which Haiya introduced at Sulom in order to revive, reform and rebrand the league.
“The manifesto was a product of the clubs’ aspirations after wide consultations. We cannot depart from the manifesto now because it will be like killing clubs’ aspirations. We have made something that is working and, as such, we cannot abandon something which is working,” Mitawa said.
