Mzuzu Central Hospital (MCH) has one Covid case, with the patent being admitted to the facility’s isolation ward.
The development has prompted hospital officials to urge people in the country to continue following Covid preventative measures.
MCH Head of Internal Medicine John Chipolombwa said people should get Covid vaccines to reduce their chances of contracting the virus, urging those who did not get vaccinated to get the jab.
He said it is unfortunate that people have adopted a relaxed attitude towards Covid, observing that very few people are washing hands, observing social and physical distance and putting on facemasks when they are in crowded places.

“We are saying despite the number [of people with Covid] dropping, let us not relax because Covid is still there. Let’s follow all preventive measures. Those who have not been vaccinated should do so and those who wish to get a booster [shot] can also do so,” Chipolombwa said.

Chilapondwa highlighted that MCH has capacity to provide quality healthcare to Covid patients but was quick to say people should follow preventive measures to contain the numbers.
Similarly, Malawi Health Equity Network Executive Director George Jobe said laxity in following Covid protocols could escalate cases.
Jobe noted that information that Covid cases dwindled discouraged “many people from getting vaccinated” against the disease.
“It is important to follow Covid preventive measures. Remember that Covid preventive measures can also help in the prevention of cholera, typhoid and scabies,” Jobe said.
