The Department of Arts in the Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture has been allocated K2.4 billion in the current budget.
Director of Arts in the Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture Humphrey Mpondaminga said yesterday that out of that, K1.9 billion will go towards infrastructure development with a focus on Blantyre Cultural Centre (BCC) and National Arts and Culture Centre.
He said there was something to smile about for creatives, especially with the rehabilitation of the once-mighty entertainment BCC, which is in pathetic state.
Creatives have bemoaned the delays in rehabilitating BCC which was ransacked by thieves in 2011 soon after it was bought from the French government at K300 million.

“This is progressive, now we will undertake some of the activities we have been failing to do,” Mpondaminga said.

In November last year, Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda reaffirmed government’s commitment to building the National Arts and Culture Centre in Lilongwe.
Chimwendo Banda told The Daily Times that this is a flagship project for art which would have a national theatre, school for the arts and national museum.
