By Llywellenie Mpasa:

National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has congratulated Malawi National Women’s Football Team on its historic achievement of reaching the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) final and securing qualification to the Fifa Women’s World Cup.

The bank’s Chief Executive Officer, Harold Jiya, said they are proud to have supported the development of women’s football in Malawi, describing the progress as a reflection of what can be achieved when talent is backed by sustained investment and support.

“As a bank that has consistently believed in the potential of women’s football, we are immensely proud to have supported the women’s league and the national team on this journey,” he said.

Jiya congratulated administrators, including Football Association of Malawi (Fam), players, technical team members and all stakeholders for their contribution to the Scorchers’ historic achievement.

He said the bank had consistently believed in the potential of women’s football and invested in initiatives aimed at identifying and nurturing talent at grassroots and national level.

“Our investment in women’s football was driven by the belief that empowering women through sport could contribute to the country’s future development. At NBM, our support was founded on a simple conviction: that when we invest in women, we invest in the future of Malawi,” Jiya said.

He said the introduction of the NBM Women’s Football Premier League was part of the bank’s efforts to provide a platform for women to showcase their talent and develop players capable of competing at the highest level.

Jiya said the Scorchers’ success demonstrated that investment in women’s football was beginning to bear fruit.

“That is why we launched the NBM Women’s Football Premier League, to uncover women’s talent in football. We are proud to see it bearing fruit as the Scorchers make it to the Wafcon final and to the World Cup,” he said.

Jiya described the national team’s progress as a powerful affirmation of the importance of providing players with opportunities, resources and professional support.

“Today, we celebrate not only your achievements, but the pride, inspiration and hope you have brought to the nation,” he said.

He further assured the Scorchers that NBM plc remained committed to supporting their journey as they continue to represent Malawi at continental and global level.

“As you take your place among Africa’s finest and continue your journey on the world stage, know that NBM plc remains proud to walk alongside you,” Jiya said.
