Newly appointed Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) board chairperson Jim Kalua has warned associations to adhere to good governance principles or risk losing annual funding.
Kalua was speaking at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe during the annual general meeting for the Minthopa Volleyball team.
“I do not like shortcuts because they cut you short. During my tenure, I will ensure all associations adhere to good governance principles such as holding annual general meetings on time and providing audited accounts.
“Those who have worked with me before know that I value transparency and accountability. Together with the rest of the board, we will work diligently with associations to improve sports in the country,” he said.
Kalua urged associations to be innovative and transparent in order to earn support from the corporate sector.

“Sports, if well managed, can generate income. While associations need government funding, they also need to find ways to generate income on their own,” Kalua, who is the founder of the Football Legends Association, said.
Sports analyst Frank Chakanga said it was important that Kalua had shared his vision for sports in the country.
“Now associations know they need to follow sports guidelines if they are to be entitled to annual funding,” Chakanga said.
Kalua’s predecessor Sunduzwayo launched guidelines for all MNCS-affiliated sports associations to follow as a way of improving management and enhancing accountability.

The guidelines require associations to declare all sources of funding from within and outside Malawi and provide annual audited accounts.
