Lilongwe’s cinematic magic turned brighter over the weekend during the third edition of Nyasa Film Festival.
16 Barz: King of Bawo and Prayer for the Departed from Kenya, respectively, shone at Madsoc Theatre.
The movie 16 Barz: King of Bawo bagged the Best Malawian feature film, with Prayer for the Departed claiming the Best International Feature Film award.
As if this was not enough, 16 Barz: King of Bawo also claimed the Best Director through Mirriam Phiri and Best Editor Award through Blessings Sibu Sikali and Jonathan Kapumba.
Directed by Phiri under Nthano Lab Production, the movie blends music and drama to explore social issues.

Phiri wrote on her Facebook page that she was excited with the film’s success.
“This is a film that blends entertainment, emotion and musical artistry,” Phiri said.
Other winners during the two-day festival—which started with screenings before peaking with the awards—included The Cage (Best Short Film), In the Shadows of Epworth (Best Documentary) and Festus Kiprotich (Best Cinematography) from Prayer for the Departed.
Nyasa International Film Festival founder Philmon Kuipa described this year’s event as a success.

“We are excited with the way the festival was executed this year. Unlike during the previous editions, this time we had a sponsor, an organisation from the United Kingdom,” Kuipa said.
“We had a strong team of volunteers and we continue to grow because, this year, we also had 10 awards from six awards last year. “Again, past editions of the festival were held for a day. This year, it was a two-day festival,” Kuipa said.
