Nsanje Youth Centre will spring back to life today, with Football Association of Malawi (Fam) set to inaugurate the rehabilitated facility.
Fam implemented the project with Fifa Foundation funding amounting to over K1 billion in response to the effects of Cyclone Idai in 2019.
Fam Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka said the inauguration fulfils the association’s promise to open the facility within the first six months of the year.
“It was in March when Fam President Fleetwood Haiya, alongside Fifa Foundation official Mellisa Cuzzani, visited the facility, and we assured the public that the facility would be inaugurated before the end of June.
“We are glad that we have beaten that deadline and are finally handing over the facility to the people of Nsanje. This facility will play a huge role in bridging the gap between elite teams and amateur teams,” Zakazaka told Fam’s website.

Some of the facility’s main features are a new modern football pitch and a solar power irrigation system.
According to Fam.mw, the pitch has been secured with a wire perimeter fence as well as a brick wall around the facility, a VIP stand and dressing rooms for teams and match officials.
The website states that a match between Umodzi and Nsanje Medicals will spice up the opening ceremony.
Haiya and officials from ministries of Sports and Local Government are expected to attend the ceremony.
