Organisers of this year’s commemoration of Malawi’s founding president Hastings Kamuzu Banda have called for political neutrality at the national event.
They have urged attendees to avoid party colours as the country prepares to gather on May 14.
The annual ceremony, which falls on a public holiday, is expected to bring together government officials, religious leaders, traditional leaders and members of the public in remembrance of the late leader’s contribution to the country.
In an update on the commemorations, a member of the Kamuzu family, Ken Kandodo, said preparations have been completed and organisers are now waiting for tomorrow’s event.

“Kamuzu was a man for all people. He believed in unity, peace and togetherness and that is why everyone is welcome to attend the celebrations,” Kandodo said.
He said the family was pleased that people continue to honour the former president years after his death and that it reflects ongoing appreciation of his role in shaping the nation.
Deputy Director in the Department of Museums and Monuments Blessings Walawala said the commemorations are a national event and attendees are being encouraged to avoid wearing political party colours.
“This is a public event for all Malawians regardless of political affiliation. We are encouraging people to come in neutral attire because the day is about remembering the country’s founding president,” Walawala said.

Presidential Advisor on Religious Affairs Reverend Alexander Kambiri said the gathering will also include prayers for the country and reflection on national unity.
“This is a day of prayers and celebration. We want Malawians to come together peacefully as one people while remembering the life and legacy of Kamuzu Banda,” Kambiri said.
The commemorations are held every year on May 14 in honour of the late president, who ruled Malawi for three decades after independence.
Kamuzu Banda died on November 25, 1997 in Johannesburg, South Africa, at the age of 99 after a period of illness linked to advanced age.
