READY TO SWING—Chakwera trains ahead of the tournament

The Presidential Charity Golf Tournament slated for tomorrow at Lilongwe Golf Club has raised its targeted K400 million through sponsorship and registration fees.

The amount is far above K281 million which was raised during the inaugural tournament at the same venue last year.

Organising committee chairperson Gift Gondwe said they are excited to have reached the target.

“We thank all our sponsors and Malawians of goodwill for coming forward to support the cause and play in this noble tournament. Without them, this would not have been possible,’’ Gondwe said.

Gondwe said 150 golfers are expected to take part in the day-long tournament.

“We finalised all logistical arrangements for the tournament. We expect more golfers to take part in the tournament,’’ he said.

First Capital Bank (FCB) is the main sponsor of this year’s tournament after pumping K100 million into the event.

Proceeds from this year’s tournament will go towards supporting Cyclone Freddy survivors as they work towards rebuilding their lives and communities.

The funds will also be channelled towards supporting needy students in the country’s public universities.

This year’s tournament will be held under the theme ‘Swing to Serve’.

President Lazarus Chakwera and Vice President Saulos Chilima will take part in the tournament.

Apart from Chakwera and Chilima, several high-profile officials are expected to participate in the event.

The tournament is taking place for the second time after last year’s launch.

The initiative enabled the organising committee to reach out to Tropical Cyclone survivors with relief items such as blankets, maize seeds and materials worth K120 million.
