By Llywellenie Mpasa:

The Malawi National Netball Team, the Queens, secured their first victory at the Commonwealth Games after defeating Northern Ireland 64-48 placed Blue Eagles on goal difference.

The Nomads have scored 21 goals whereas Silver have scored 19 goals.

Both Wanderers and Silver missed a chance to extend the lead at the summit after fellow title contenders, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets lost 1-0 to Goshen City Dedza Dynamos at Dedza Stadium on Saturday.

After 11 matches, the top four teams are only separated by two points.

That sets up a potentially fascinating battle for top spot in the first round, which has four matches to go.

At Mpira Stadium, Promise Kamwendo opened the scoring for Wanderers with a powerful header from a corner kick just eight minutes into the match.

The lead only lasted two minutes as Patrick Phiri pulled Masters level with a well taken goal.

Wanderers’ striker Lameck Mithi had a ball into the net but it was ruled out for offside.

After the break, Masters showed great character, coupled with good goalkeeping from Richard Chimbamba, who denied the Nomads scoring chances on several occasions.

Wanderers Coach Bob Mpinganjira said he was disappointed with the result.

“A very disappointing result despite that we played well. We wanted to win but that is football,” he said.

Masters Coach Peter Mponda said he was satisfied with the result.

“I am very happy with the point we got from the match. It was a tough match but we denied them space on the ball,” Mponda said.

At Dedza Stadium, Zebron Kalima scored for Silver in the 12th minute but Samson Phiri equalised for Mitundu after 31 minutes.

Mitundu are on position nine on the log table with 15 points from 11 matches.

Elsewhere, Kamuzu Barracks’ revival continued yesterday as they thrashed Mafco 4-1 at Civo Stadium.

Kelvin Hanganda scored a hat-trick after Rashid Chilomo scored the opener for the soldiers.

Precious Katsonga netted the consolation goal for Mafco.

KB are second from bottom with 10 points from 11 matches.

In yet another match, Karonga beat Creck Sporting Club 2-1 at Karonga Stadium in Karonga District
