Raiply Malawi Limited has embarked on a project of setting up a $9 million (about K10.1 billion) powerplant through which it will be generating about 10 megawatts at its main factory located in Chikangawa Forest in Mzimba.
Raiply Malawi Chief Executive Officer Khrishna Das said the plant will be using waste from wood to produce biogas.
Das revealed this when Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change Michael Usi toured the company’s concession under Viphya Plantations to appreciate its operations in managing the forest.
Speaking in an interview after the tour, Raiply Malawi Public Relations Officer Dalitso Chimwala added that, in the past years, the company has been relying on Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) power, which has been riddled with blackouts.
Chimwala said the company’s plan is to start the actual works early next year, adding that the surplus will be channeled into the national grid.

“The problem is that any power outage affects our production. This power will supplement Escom’s electricity. Because we are expanding, we will need more power for our production,” Chimwala said.
Usi said Raiply Malawi is using wood waste in producing furniture and other products which are exported, thereby bringing forex to the country.
“They are indeed doing a good job, with good renovations, but all these good things can be spoiled if they are not paying their taxes religiously,” Usi said.
Raiply Malawi has seven factories of Panel Mill, Value Added Product, Figure Joints, Briquette Plant, Pole Plant, Medium Density Fiberboard and Saw Mill and they use wood as raw materials.
