The world has many discoveries waiting to be made. The most exciting thing is that these amazing discoveries have to be made by you and me.

Potentially, we have the ability to bring in novel ideas that can make a difference in the world. We are beneficiaries of the discoveries and amazing ideas of others.

The biggest challenge we face is to realise our potential so that by the time we leave the earth, we bequeath to the next generation ideas and innovations that will enthral them.

Napoleon Dzombe has built Malawi’s first manmade lake. What many of us never thought was possible became possible. What sounded more of an illusion, a crazy idea, has come to reality and people are flocking to Dowa to witness this miracle turned into reality.

Napoleon Dzombe through his Kalipano Hotel has changed the tourism landscape of Malawi. All of a sudden, the little-developed Dowa has become a magnet to business executives for meetings and socialites for pleasure. One person, absolutely one person, can change the world.

When you look at the Napoleon Dzombe lake miracle which has manifested in our own lifetime, we better come to the conclusion that whatever it is that the human mind can conceive can come to pass.

The most unfortunate fact is that we end up being perpetual dreamers. Our life starts and ends in dreams.

We cherish being spectators. We are good at pointing out what is not working in respect of the ideas of others. It is all that because we take the comfort zone. We prefer the tried and tested. The paradox of life is that difference makers make things out of nothing.

Just when we never thought that a local person could own a bank, boom, Thomson Mpinganjira comes up with the bank with the largest network of branches in the country – FDH Bank.

Mpinganjira surprised the world. What used to be a dream is now a reality. In this regard, many Malawians see it now as possible to own a bank.

Just when we considered women football as nothing that can make a difference, boom, Tabitha Chawinga perfected her skills. She is now Malawi’s hot sporting talent on the international scene; the very same Tabitha born from one of the poorest countries on earth; the very same Tabitha who we ignored when she was showcasing her talent on the local stage until she conquered the world.

Now we proudly watch her on television. Now we read her amazing goal scoring prowess and take pride. She surprised the world.

Surprise the world we will and it is possible. Nevertheless, it is imperative that we appreciate that it is not easy. People that surprise the world are not faint-fainted.

They keep on carrying their dream despite the discouragements they may face. When they fail along the path, they realise that failure is not fatal but an opportunity to lead them to the right path.

People that surprise the world take the road least travelled, as Robert Frost well said. If you are just a follower of the dreams of others, then surely you will have nothing to surprise the world with. You are only walking in the shadows of the surprise that already happened.

You are the next iconic business mogul to surprise the world; the next cherished academic that will bring in theories that no one else has ever conceived.

You are the next musician that will storm the world with songs that will soothe souls of people. You are the next film star generations have to talk about. You are the next television personality that will amaze the world with novel ideas and presentation styles.

You will make it but only if you believe and are ready to make the necessary sacrifices. You will make it as long as you are ready to defy the comfort zone in pursuit of your crazy ideas.

You will make it as long as you have the resilience to stand up every time you fall. Surprise the world. Unleash your best potential. The world is waiting for you.
