Malawi Women’s National Football Team captain Tabitha Chawinga believes it is just a matter of time before she starts scoring regularly for her new side Olympique Lyonnais.
Tabitha said this after scoring her second goal for Lyonnais after joining the side from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) before the start of the 2024 season.
Interestingly, Tabitha scored against her former side PSG in a D1 Arkema French Women’s Football League match on Sunday.
The goal helped Lyonnais to go to the top with 16 points, one point ahead of second-placed PSG, having played six games each.
Tabitha said the goal did not only delight her but was important for her team.

“It was nice scoring a winner against my former team and help my team collect maximum points. We moved a point above PSG in the league. I thank God for all the mercies and everything about me. It is just a matter of time before I start scoring regularly but I thank teammates for being supportive,” Tabitha said.
Meanwhile, Ascent Academy Head Coach Thom Mkolongo has backed Tabitha to flourish at Lyon following her switch from PSG.
“Tabitha needed to settle down first following her move from PSG. Lyon is a very big and a top team in the French women’s league. The goal will help her boost her confidence to score more goals,” Mkolongo said.
She opened her scoring account for Lyonnais on September 27 when her side defeated Strasbourg 4-0.

Tabitha has a reputation of winning the golden boot award on her debut season, having achieved the feat in Sweden, China and Italy.
In 2022, she made history as the first African to win the Golden Boot award after scoring 23 goals in 21 matches for Italian side Inter Milan Women.
Tabitha won several awards, including player of the season twice and golden boot accolades, in China.
