Malawi Women’s National Football Team striker Temwa Chawinga produced a vintage performance as Kansas City Current advanced to the final of the National Women’s Super League (NWSL) Summer Cup after beating North Carolina Courage 2-0 Wednesday.
Chawinga marked her return from injury with the fastest goal of the competition when she scored the opener within two minutes of the match.
“Chawinga, who missed Kansas City’s last two matches due to injury, punctuated her return with the fastest Summer Cup goal, scored only 1.43 minutes into the match.
“After receiving a ball from midfielder Debinha, the Malawian striker fired a shot that caromed off Bova, rebounding right back to where Debinha was waiting. Debinha’s ensuing shot was blocked and skittered towards a running Chawinga, who then delivered it into the empty net to put Kansas up 1-0,” Kansas FC website reported.
Debinha scored the other goal for Kansas in the 78th minute.

Chawinga was thrilled with her performance.
“It feels great to score for the team. We are now focusing on the final,” she said.
The Scorchers striker is currently joint top scorer in the NWSL with 12 goals, alongside Zambian Barbara Banda.
However, the league is on recess due to the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics underway in France.

She had an incredible season last year, winning three Golden Boot awards and scoring 30 goals while playing for Wuhan Jiangda.
Chawinga also scored nine goals as the Scorchers won the 2023 Cosafa Women’s Championship in South Africa and was named Player of the Tournament.
